Dr. Brian Bates is a professor of anthropology and the Executive Director and Senior Principal Investigator of the Institute of Archaeology. For the past 29 years Dr. Bates has conducted archaeological research in Virginia, the United Kingdom, and the Caribbean. During his career, Dr. Bates has led 77 field projects that have involved more than 1,460 students in undergraduate field research both domestically and internationally. His research interests include prehistoric human settlement patterns, social hierarchy and the intersection of human systems and environmental change. In 2015 Brian founded the Longwood Institute of Archaeology. Building upon the 40 year tradition of archaeology at Longwood, the mission of the Institute is to empower undergraduates through life-changing experiences in archaeological field research. One of the first projects of the Institute was the Hurricane Sandy Shoreline project that is the subject of this presentation.
