Breakout Session 6
Recovery and Resilience: Ellicott City

Recovery & Resilience: Historical Ellicott City after the Flood  (90 min.)

On July 30, 2016, Ellicott City, Maryland experienced devastating flooding when nearly six inches of rain fell in less than two hours. This flash flood claimed two lives, significantly damaged dozens of businesses and displaced many residents. While Ellicott City has experienced many flood events through its 250-year history, the destruction caused by the 2016 flood is the worst in recent memory. During this session you will hear about the historic city’s demonstration of resilience and determination to recover and its commitment of building stronger and more resilient.  Presenters will discuss how local government responded to the devastating disaster and the plans for rebuilding to foster economic development, preserve local historic and cultural resources, and promote new investment and business development.
